Episode 7: A Heart Of Passion For Homeschooling

Episode 7: A Heart Of Passion For Homeschooling

Last month we introduced a new theme on our blog - stories about homeschooling told from real moms. These posts are to encourage you along your homeschooling journey, share experiences and connect with other homeschooling moms all over the world.

This week's homeschooling story is from Jessica. Read below to hear her story about how homeschooling became her passion and though she's a busy mom and full-time student herself homeschooling has brought her family closer together.

Hello, I am Jessica. I am an overwhelmed and exhausted mother of a 6-year-old little girl. I blog, vlog, homeschool and go to college full time online. None of this was expected or planned but I would not trade it for the world.

I always knew I would stay home with Emily until she started school so when she started getting close to school age I decided to go back to college full-time, so I would have something to reenter the workforce with, a college degree. But as the time came for her to start preschool I just wasn’t ready to let go. Emily is my baby, she is my only baby, I went through SO MUCH just to get her here safely and the thought of sending her into the world at 4 years old was more than my mommy heart could handle. I begged and pleaded with my husband to let me just keep her home for preschool, I mean come on I couldn’t mess up letters and numbers, right? He agreed and thus started our homeschool journey.

Two years later I am so in love with homeschooling that I blog and vlog about it in my spare time, it has become one of my biggest passions. Homeschool changed our family for the better and I am passionate about what it can do for others.

Our days all look different because we are very eclectic, and we do what I like to call life schooling. Just last night sitting at a restaurant we had an entire lesson on apostrophes and possessive words and the difference in possessive versus plural, all because the restaurant was named Angel’s. This is what homeschooling in our family is like. The only thing that has remained consistent in our days is morning basket, that is something we do every day. Morning basket is a time when we sit on the couch together and do our devotion, read from a variety of books, do a picture study and listen to music. My main resources are books and games. Yes, I have curriculum, but I use it as a resource or a guide. Time to master math facts? There’s a book and a game for that! Want to learn about animals? There’s a book and a game for that too!

We also enjoy spending as much time outside as possible. We live on the edge of a National Forest, so you never know what you will see in our backyard. We have had birds of all kinds, turtles, alligators, deer, and a bear so far. Everyday is a new adventure in our homeschool.
